I remember watchingAmerican Piefor the first time when it first came out on DVD, so imagine my surprise to learn that it’s just turned 24 years old.
Iconic for a variety of NSFW reasons, the original film created a highly relatable, hugely sexual, and laugh-out-loud funny franchise. However, according to Seann William Scott, the man behind the character of Stifler, the films wouldn’t be made today.

“You know, I was having a conversation with a friend the other day, I was like, ‘You could never make American Pie these days’,” revealed the actor. “Some of the stuff in that movie, you would get arrested and probably go to jail for a long time if you did it.”

It isn’t that teen movies aren’t of interest anymore, but rather that humour has come a long way since the 00s, especially when it comes to depicting teenage sex; this is something Scott makes reference to as well. According to him, audiences don’t have the “appetite” for “those sorts of movies” anymore, with value placed in “witty, smart humour and good writing as opposed to just something kind of over-the-top”.
Love or hate the films, they’re a moment in cinematic history that we can look back on either cringing or with a fond smile on our faces; for me, it’s a mixture of both. Everyone in my secondary school watched these films, but I too have to agree that they haven’t aged well at all. Then again, PS players are using their consoles fora lot of “alone time”, so maybe the films are still fitting…?
