Batman fans furious over controversial name change nobody asked for

A legendary Batman character has had his name changed and fans are not happy about it.

There are many iconic characters in theDCuniverse, especially when it comes to the protector of Gotham City, Bruce Wayne akaBatman. In fact, it’s fair to say that Batman is arguably the most popularcomic bookcharacter of all time.

Check out The Penguin trailer below!

However, the Caped Crusader wouldn’t be much of a hero if it wasn’t for some equally legendary villains such as theJoker,Harley Quinn, Riddler, Catwoman and many more. One other name worth mentioning and is the topic of today’s discussion is Oswald Cobblepot aka Penguin.

I guess you’re wondering what is the issue with Penguin’s new name. Well, in the new series, it’s been changed from Oswald Cobblepot and shortened to Oz Cobb, which kind of makes him sound like a crusty cob that you order from a sandwich wagon.

“The Penguin’s name is changed from Oswald Cobblepot to Oz Cobb inThe Batmanuniverse to make the character more grounded,”sharedRedditor MWheel5643.

“This is basically the Streisand Effect. Everyone is so used to Oswald Cobblepot as his name that changing it to freaking “Oz Cobb” has the opposite effect and makes it feel less grounded,” replied GhostMug.

“Ah so, Oswald Cobblepot isn’t grounded, but the Penguin name is fine,” said a sarcastic SPBF3D withlalolaloslas simply saying “that’s stupid.”

Adding to the conversation, IamtheShadows00 clarified the shortened name change. “I just want to point this out for clarity’s sake: I think Oz Cobb is just somewhat of a nickname.”

They continued: “I believe his birth name is Oswald Cobb. The reason I say this is because in the trailer released a month ago, Oz’s mother calls him “Oswald.” They may have edited this out for the show, but this is what I wanted to share.”

At the end of the day, the name Oz Cobb does sound odd but it’s not the end of the world and I doubt the likes of Batman or Commissioner Gordon will be using the nickname. I’m sure that will be reserved for the criminal scum of Gotham City.
