Call Of Duty: Black Ops dev Terry Hess has died

Game developer Terry Hess, known for his work on 2010’sCall of Duty: Black Opsand The Outer Worlds franchise, has sadly passed away.

He then went on to join Treyarch in 2005, working on the teams responsible for 2007’sSpider-Man3, 2008’s007: Quantum of Solace, and 2010’sCall of Duty: Black Ops.

Hess continued to work on military shooters, with stints on DICE’sMedal of Honor: Warfighter,and Visceral Games and EA Montreal’sArmy of Two: The Devil’s Cartel.

It was in 2013 that Hess then joined Obsidian. After working on the free-to-playArmored Warfare, Hess became a part of the environments team on 2019’sThe Outer Worlds, continuing his work on the still-in-developmentThe Outer Worlds 2.

“Terry left a loving wife and daughter behind and this is for them. They will be the sole recipient of any funds raised here as we just want to do everything we can for them.”

Of his work onThe Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian said, “Terry had been taking his role as the lead environment artist incredibly seriously and pushed on what he felt we could, and should, be doing with the worlds we create from a visual standpoint. As we continue development of the sequel, we will strive to make sure that vision is achieved.”

“As someone who anyone from any department could talk to, Terry was warm, welcoming, and a fantastic mentor. His loss will be felt for a long time and will be impossible to replace. He will be missed greatly,” the eulogy finished.

It’s news that’s undoubtedly caused great shock and sadness throughout the industry.

Obsidian Entertainment producer Mikey Dowlingtweeted, “We lost one of our own last week and it is rough. Terry was absolutely wonderful and can’t be replaced. We want to be able to help his family in every way that we can so if you have the means, please help or at least share. Tell people you love them.”

Obsidian lead and senior animator Cathy Nicholsadded, “Last week Obsidian had an incredible loss of Terry Hess. He was a great friend and a lovely individual.”
