However, if there’s one system that will have no concerns about whether it will be able to runGTA VI, it’s theNintendo Switch. I love this hybrid system, but we all know that it will kill the console even if it tries to boot up theGTA Vloading screen, let alone attempt to runGTA VI. Yet, what about the unannounced Nintendo Switch 2 or whatever it may be called?
At the time of writing, the Nintendo Switch 2 hasn’t been announced, but some reports have claimed that thenew console might arrive in 2024. Other rumours claim that as the assumed name suggests, theNintendo Switch 2 will take inspirationfrom its predecessor. In a recent episode of Digital Foundry’sQ&A related toGTA VI, the tech experts discussed whether the Nintendo Switch 2 might be able to run the next game in the Grand Theft Auto series.
Richard Leadbetter explained that runningGTA VIon the Nintendo Switch 2 would be “very tricky to pull off”. He continued “I’d love to say it would happen. I don’t think it will, realistically. It’s a mobile chipset. We’ve seen a lot of amazing things on the Switch 1. Switch 2 is going to be a lot better, a proper generational leap, and forward-looking in many ways. But the stuff they [Rockstar Games] seem to be rolling out forGTA VIis possibly beyond that.”
Digital Foundry colleague Oliver Mackenzie also explained that ifGTA VIwas to run on the Nintendo Switch 2, especially with the heavy demands on CPU, he said “The Switch 2 is not going to be powerful enough to run all that ray tracing. I just cannot see it.”
