Unfortunately though, a former Valve employee has burst everyone’s bubble, sayingLeft 4 Deadwas always intended to be a testbed for the source engine, and thatLeft 4 Dead 3isn’t on the cards. This was confirmed in an interview forThe VŌC Podcastwith former Valve writer Chet Faliszek, who said the following: “As we were working on Source 2, we often usedLeft 4 Deadas the testbed … So you may see things that came out of there that were really more the testbed than, ‘Hey, we’re making a new Left 4 Dead.'”

Faliszek went on to say, “With everything at Valve, there’s a bunch of stuff happening in the background, things are being tried and whatnot … ButLeft 4 Deadis a good base to try things on because it’s a multiplayer game. So you’re gonna exercise that muscle, it’s co-op, you’re working together.”

Essentially, the Left 4 Dead series was a way for Valve to test new ideas that also doubled as a fun arcade-shooter to play with friends. That being said, while there are reportedly no plans for a thirdLeft 4 Deadgame, it doesn’t mean one won’t stumble its way out of Valve in the distant future, which you’d think would be a no-brainer given the immense popularity of the series.
