Minecraft Steve finally has an official origin story, and fans aren’t impressed

We finally have a proper trailer for Jack Black’s upcomingMinecraftfilm, although not all press is good press in this case.

Theofficial trailerfor Warner Bros’ upcoming “A Minecraft Movie” dropped last night, and it’s already raked in over 5 million views in less than 15 hours.

It looks exactly like everyone expected it would, a weird mishmash of (literal) blocky CGI and live-action actors swanning about in front of a green screen. Can’t wait to see it nominated for “Best Adaptation” at the 2025 Game Awards.

One thing we perhaps didn’t expect is the trailer’s focus on Steve’s origin story. Up until now, the most we knew aboutMinecraft’sdefault character is that he enjoys wearing sky-blue t-shirts.

As Jack Black’s voiceover in the trailer reveals, Steve naturally found himself compelled to dig for his entire life.

To quote Steve himself, “As a child, I yearned for the mines… but something always got in the way. But the call of the mines was too strong, so one day I started digging, and digging…”

Then he finds a magic cube and gets isekai’d into the world ofMinecraft. The rest of the screenwriters in Hollywood have been reaaaal quiet since this trailer dropped.

“Bro who the hell wants to go to the mines as a child?” commented @diaryofarobot.

“This feels like one of those SNL movie trailers like Bambi starring the Rock” replied @GunNutproductionsOG

And finally, @michaelliu5260 simply stated “There’s no way they open with the “the children yearn for the mines” meme”.

So, what are we predicting, folks? Somewhere in the 10-20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes? We’ll check back in 2025 to see who was the closest.
