The game follows new protagonist Rook in an epic adventure to prevent an elven god from tearing down the Veil, a barrier between the physical world and the dream-like demon realm known as the Fade. Dragon Age veterans will know that the Fade has been a mainstay in the series, with mages drawing their power from it and demons occasionally slipping through the Veil to wreak havoc. If the demons are set loose en masse, it’ll be the end of the Dragon Age world.
With an 82 out of 100 averaged from critics on Metacritic, and3.8 out of 5 starsfrom over 160 Amazon reviews, the consensus is that this is a very solid game that’s especially worth a punt whilst discounted. “This game exceeded expectations,” said one five-star review. “I didn’t think they could match Inquisition but in my opinion they definitely did. Fantastic storytelling, great sidekicks and none of side quests are repetitive, which is an achievement in itself.”
“Bought this on release, and had finished the game within 4 days, 75 hours all in,” said another five-star review. “It is incredible. The combat is fun, and quick to pick up. Skills and equipment mean you can switch up how you play quickly and easily to try out new things. The storytelling is exceptional, and it delivers the emotional punches I was hoping for. Another added: “This is a good game. Simple as that. The visuals, music and voice acting are all solid. Tonally it’s different from past entries, and it has a more contemporary feel.”
Some have been disappointed that choices in previous games haven’t been honoured in the new title, with some players having dutifully stored their world states since the original game in 2009. “Previous choices made in games are effectively completely ignored,” said one review. “The excellent addition of The Keep forInquisitionmade you feel like your previous decisions had actual weight within the environment of Thedas. This has been pushed to the side forVeilguard.”
Others weren’t keen about the change in visual style since 2014’sDragon Age: Inquisition. “The character design is in the uncanny valley I’m afraid. The models look a bit weird," said one.
