PlayStation cancels multiple games following brutal layoffs

PlayStation has issued over 900 layoffs this week, affecting several well-known studios.

These include the likes ofGuerilla Games, theHorizon: Forbidden Westdevelopers,Insomniac Gameswho created theMarvel’s Spider-Mangames andNaughty Dog, known forThe Last Of Usseries.

In addition to this, the company has reportedly closed the entire London studio, which was tasked with creatingPlayStationVR games.

Sonyalsoconfirmedseveral games have been cancelled as a result of the layoffs, one of which is rumoured to have been aTwisted Metal live-service game. The company said: “We looked at our studios and our portfolio, evaluating projects in various stages of development, and have decided that some of those projects will not move forward.”

The current PlayStation CEO, Jim Ryan, who’ll be leaving the company in March provided a statement on the layoffs and closures, calling it a “hard decision.” He went on to say the ones leaving the company are “incredibly talented people” but “we need to future ready ourselves to set the business up for what lies ahead."

It’s currently unclear what PlayStation’s plan for the future is, and why it was necessary to slash its workforce again. That being said, it’s speculated that it might have something to do with the development of the next PlayStation console, as well as the next-gen games that’ll be released for it. In an earnings call earlier this year Sony said the PS5 is in the latter stages of its life.
