An announcement fromSonystatingPlayStationusers will soon lose access to purchased TV shows has sparked a debate about the longevity of Digital Stores.

The companyannounced the departure of several Warner Bros showsin a statement that read: “Due to our content licensing arrangements with content providers, you will no longer be able to watch any of your previously purchased Discovery content and the content will be removed from your video library.”
This caused outrage amongst users, as it’s bad enough that new users won’t be able to purchase the shows, but those who have purchased them won’t even be able to watch them.
Further outrage was prompted when the statement said nothing about potential refunds for customers who would be unable to access the content they’d dropped their hard-earned cash on, leading many to call the entire situation a scam, as well as question the legality of it.
In a since-deletedposton Reddit, users flocked to give their takes on the problem, with many pointing it out as a good reason to purchase physical media rather than digital.

One user theorised “Discovery is probably deleting all their programming from existence for a tax break or something. This is the world we live in now.”
Another was worried other online stores like Steam could have similar problems in the years to come, saying “Valve, if you ever pull something like this… So help me God…”
Finally one took the opportunity to slate all digital stores, stating “Digital Stores are a scam and this is just more proof of this.”
While it’s only a few Warner Bros TV shows at the moment, it does raise the question of what else could be taken from us in the years to come, if games start becoming inaccessible without refunds there surely needs to be legislation put in place to protect buyers.
