You may or may not be aware, but it’s actually possible to head into the game’s settings and fiddle with the HUD so that the minimap is permanently off.

As one fanravedon the Red Dead Redemption subreddit, this small tweak is a total game-changer.

“As soon as the map is gone, everything is so much more immersive. I’m now having to find my way around using landmarks instead of just following a GPS.

“I get lost all the time which allows me to discover things I never knew existed. There have also been a few times already that I’ve stumbled on a quest organically, instead of just going to it. If you haven’t tried it yet, I really recommend it.”

Another added: “I play in first person with just the compass and it really is an experience. You end up recognising landmarks, every gunfight is life or death, you don’t know when it’s coming and don’t know where the enemies are either.

“I don’t really use deadeye either. The game isn’t so much a rootin' tootin' cowboy game, it’s a fight for survival and I feel it fits the narrative of the gang much better that way.”

So if you’re looking to squeeze a little extra life out ofRed Dead Redemption 2, take these players' word for it and try no map and/or first-person. I know I’m giving it a go.
