Right now, the Resident Evil series has never been hotter and a large part of that has been down to the fantastic remakes that Capcom has been bringing into the world of survival horror.

The next stage, at least chronologically for the mainline series afterResident Evil 3, would have beenResident Evil Code: Veronica, a remake that fans are desperate to see. However,Capcomdecided to skipCode Veronicaand go straight intoResident Evil 4. That’s not to say that Capcom can’t or won’t go back to Claire and Chris Redfield’s tale inCode Veronica, but if Capcom were to stick to chronological order,Resident Evil 5would be next in line from the mainline entries.

From what I remember at its launch in 2009, despite selling very well,Resident Evil 5received some bad rep for not being a survival horror game as it was very much an extension following the success of the originalResident Evil 4. However, whileResident Evil 4still had some elements of horror (but mostly action),Resident Evil 5was very much an action game with a few hints of horror thrown in on sparse occasions. Though the fantastic DLCLost in Nightmaresdid give fans a taste of some old-school Resident Evil.
Resident Evil 5was also a fantastic co-op game and arguably had my favourite version of the Mercenaries mini-game.Resident Evil 5is a fun action game but not a good survival horror game, as much as I still love it today. So with rumours and the likelihood that it will one day receive the remake treatment from Capcom is an interesting choice. Will Capcom follow the previous formula and stick with action or will they flip the original concept and favour something more akin to survival horror? Only time will tell.
It’s certainly an interesting time to be a Resident Evil fan whether you’re new or returning. Hopefully, Capcom will announce plenty of survival horror goodness in the months ahead.
