Resident Evil 9 officially announced by Capcom

Capcom has announced that a new Resident Evil game is on the way, confirming what was easily one of the industry’s worst kept secrets.

The Japanese developer confirmed the news during last night’s digitalCapcomNext showcase. While details on the next entry in the iconic survival horror series were kept to a bare minimum, current series director Kōshi Nakanishi did reveal that a newResident Evilis in development.

Notably, Kōshi Nakanishi has worked on the likes ofResident Evil Revelationsand its sequel, as well asResident Evil 7: Biohazard. It’s not 100% clear whether the new Resident Evil game will be a direct sequel or a remade classic of yesteryear, but we can at least speculate - andResident Evil 9feels like the most likely bet.

Capcom has garnered huge success with its remakes from the 2002NintendoGameCubeResident Evilto more recent entries such asResident Evil 2,Resident Evil 3andResident Evil 4. Recent rumours have suggested thatResident Evil Code: VeronicaorResident Evil 5could be next in line to receive the makeover treatment.

That being said, if we are to take the words of Kōshi Nakanishi as gospel, his exact wording during Capcom Next was, “We’re making a new Resident Evil.” This likely implies that this will be a sequel to 2021’sResident Evil Villagewhich concluded the Ethan Winters saga, so we could possibly get a new character in the next game or a returning favourite.

Typically, when Capcom teases a new Resident Evil, the next game has usually been in development for quite a while but we can only guess at this time when it might be released. Whether it’sResident Evil 9or a remade classic, I’ll be having my fingers crossed for a 2025 release.
