Five years afterThe Rise of Skywalkerdebuted in cinemas, a brand new Star Wars trilogy has been confirmed to be in the works.

What’s perhaps unclear is the exact nature of the project.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit, though, has challenged that claim, taking to Twitter tosay, “Sources tell me it’s NOT a continuation of The Skywalker Saga, but a new story focused on new characters … a new path forward.”

Naturally,Disneyis yet to comment on the matter given that these plans have come to light earlier than intended.

I’m more inclined to go with the fact that this is a new trilogy, simply because this project is believed to be separate from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey film, even if that is on hold.

It would make no sense for a potential Episode 10 to bring in all new characters, while Rey is off continuing The Skywalker Saga outside of, well, The Skywalker Saga.

One thing that various reports have confirmed is that Simon Kinberg is attached to develop the trilogy, whatever it may be.

I wish I could say that this bodes well, but I’m not so sure.

Kinberg has some incredible producing credits to his name, includingThe Martian, Logan, Cinderella, Deadpool 2, andDeadpool & Wolverine.

Kinberg also, however, producedX-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, andDark PhoenixalongsideFantastic Four.

While those aforementioned films aren’t terrible, they aren’t exactly all great either - with Jean Grey easily being one of the most fumbled characters.

As such, many are concerned over what this means for Star Wars’ future.

“This guy has a track record of movie disasters,”wroteTwitter’s matthewcondello.

“He wrote three of the usually agreed-upon worst superhero movies ever,”addedlando_sø4.

On the flip-side, Kinberg did work as a consultant onThe Force Awakens, and helped co-createRebelsalongside Dave Filoni, so clearly he’s demonstrated to have a solid understanding of what Star Wars fans want.

Hopefully, it’s that experience that’ll come through. We just don’t want a repeat ofFantastic Four.
