While many are sceptical if James Gunn can pull off a Superman story that actually respects the character, whilst also delivering on the spectacle of an ultra-powerful alien fighting evil, but if he takes notes from this fan film, he might be okay.
The fan film in question is calledSuperman: Awakens, and it’s phenomenally good. It’s only about 5 minutes long, but perfectly encapsulates the hope and wonder of the Kryptonian, instead of making him a raging psychopath like so many other DC stories.
It takes inspiration from the Kingdom Come storyline, which seesBatman’snumber one villainThe Joker, attack the Daily Planet. Everyone in the building dies, including Superman’s sweetheart Lois Lane.
After someone takes justice into their own hands, Superman gives up on humanity and goes into exile, before eventually returning when the world needs him the most.

It’s a wonderful story, and well worth a read for any DC or comic fan, and it’s been perfectly adapted into a short film.
Following Superman recounting the woes of the past, and revisiting some of the disasters he could have prevented if he hadn’t hung up the cape, it ends with DC’s greatest hero returning to Metropolis, and reiterating the hope and joy he brings to those who need him.
It’s honestly perfect, and if there’s even the slightest chance it could turn into a full project it could become the greatest Superman film ever made.
