Having been lovers in the past, the reveal of their physical intimacy to the public left The Deep uncomfortable and embarrassed.
Although virtually everyone around this character manipulates them for their own ends, Ambrosius has genuine love for The Deep. Sorry…had.
During a heated scene in which Ambrosius confronted The Deep about his relationship with Sister Sage, explaining that he’s being used, The Deep lashed out to devastating effect.

However, the actor also “thought it was kind of cool”, too. “His violence and his anger is spilling out into the real world and has real consequences for him. He’s sort of breaking down and losing it that he actually did this thing,” he explained.
Showrunner, Eric Kripke, also commented on the scene in such a way that only solidifies our collective shock and sadness. Kripke said, “Had he [The Deep] just gone into the ocean with her, he could’ve really been happy, but he just couldn’t do it.”
