It seems that production for the second season of HBO’s live-action of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us series is in full swing and it appears that we’re going to get more than we initially thought.

In recent weeks, we’ve heard from the actress who is playing Dina (Isabela Merced), Ellie’s partner in the second game,teased the easy chemistrywith co-star Bella Ramsey. Then less then two weeks ago, it was announced thatJeffrey Wright was cast as Isaac Clarke, reprising his role fromThe Last of Us Part II.

“The story material that we got fromPart IIof the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons,” Mazin said. “When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the national breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”
This means rather than cutting loads of content to cater for the TV show, it looks like the events ofThe Last of Us Part IIwill essentially be split into two extra seasons rather than one. “We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons because we’re taking our time and will go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in season one too,” he continued.
“We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — season three will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require season four.”

Mazin concluded: “One thing is absolutely for sure, I don’t see how we could tell the story that remains after season two is complete in one more season.” So there you have it, if you were disappointed that we were going to get only three seasons ofThe Last of Us, there’s still plenty more to come.
The Last of Usseason two will launch at some point in 2025.
